Driveway Dreams
Bureau Fomo Garage
Förstergasse 8, 1020 Vienna
“Driveway Dreams” refers to the original garage as part of suburban architecture. In the suburbs, the driveway and its accompanying garage form a threshold between the house and the street, the inside and the outside, private and public, property and community, daily routine and utopia. The front yard being a place of public representation, creating an exposed, staged view of “the private,” while the garage hides what is truly personal.
Between the tension of what should be shown and what should be hidden; between the driveway, the front yard, and the street; neighbors, passersby, friends, acquaintances, and strollers meet. A place “in between” where conversations, glances, moments can arise and spontaneous interaction and communication can occur and be encouraged.
The exhibition explores how such a suburban space can be transformed into an urban environment and questions the boundaries between private and public space. The result is a hybrid place where it is unclear where the exhibition ends and the sidewalk begins. The garage, which extends into public space with its driveway and associated parking lot, is intended to develop into a place of community and opportunity for exchange, constant change, and movement.
